During the lockdown, there’s has been a reported increase in fly-tipping of 300%. Here at Jamesons Groundcare, we care about the impact on the environment of dumping waste and actively work on ways to prevent this.

What is fly-tipping?
Fly-tipping refers to the act of dumping waste illegally. Although similar, it is not the same as littering. Fly-tipping involves household, commercial, industrial, or other types of controlled waste being dumped in places where people think they won’t get caught, including gardens, fields, the side of the road, etc. This is instead of having waste taken away via collection or being taken to an authorized tip. It’s a serious offence that can lead to hefty fines or prosecution.

Why is it harmful?
As well as being an eye-sore, when this waste is dumped it can create a health hazard for both humans and wildlife. Harmful substances and materials can be toxic to animals if consumed, as well as plastic causing the risk of strangulation and suffocation. Disease transmission is also a common effect, with rodents likely to be attracted to eat any potential food items.

This even brings a risk to children if waste is dumped near where they may play outside, bringing the chance of illness or injury.

Long term effects
With harmful substances and materials being released into the environment, it could damage the ground for the long-term. This can include greenery not being able to grow back or releasing poison to plants, which can hurt wildlife and cause a chain effect. The damage to the land can also affect local businesses and properties.

Cleaning up
It’s estimated that it costs around £4 million every month for local councils to pay for the removal and clean-up as a result of fly-tippers. This is a huge cost for something that can be easily avoided. If you see someone fly-tipping, it’s important you take note of the location, as well as the individual’s registration if possible, and pass on the information to relevant authorities. Fly-tipping is a chargeable offence, and can even lead to prison time.
