Now that we’ve made it to April and the seasons have finally changed, we’ve certainly got a spring in our step. During the spring months, starting right here in April, there are lots of jobs to do in and around the garden to ensure that all plants and flowers bloom properly, and your outdoor space remains healthy and fresh as the temperatures (hopefully) continue to rise and rain starts to subside. In this blog we will be discussing some of the important tasks that you should consider undertaking during the beginning weeks of spring and into summer.
Fruit and Vegetables
During April, there are several different avenues to consider when it comes to the prosperity of your fruit and vegetables. With warm and damp weather comes slugs, especially here in the UK where those conditions are commonplace. It’s very important that you protect emerging seedlings from snails and slugs with deterrents such as coffee grounds, egg shells, copper tape and many more. Spring is also the most opportune time to sow outdoor tomatoes, chillies and courgettes in pots, so they’re ready to plant out in late May or June. Now is also a great time to plant fast-growing crops, such as radishes.
Flowers
Similar to your fruit and vegetables, it is vital that you implement measures to protect your flowers from slugs and snails. April is also the ideal time to sow a variety of hardy annuals including love-in-a-mist, pot marigolds, as well as native wildflowers. You can also enjoy instant colour in April by planting beautiful primulas and polyanthus at the front of borders and in pots.
General Maintenance
There are lots of different maintenance jobs to be undertaken at the beginning of spring to ensure that your garden reaches its maximum potential during the warmer months. This is the perfect time to lay new turf to fix any damaged areas or to create a whole new lawn. If you are struggling with lawncare and grounds maintenance, Jamesons Groundcare are on hand to help.
